The modern workplace is evolving and it’s no longer just about desks, meeting rooms, and break areas.

Increasingly, employers are integrating innovative leisure amenities like padel courts and multifunctional leisure spaces into office environments.

These additions aren’t just about fun – they’re strategic investments that reshape how people work, connect, and thrive as Agency Partner, Guy Parkes, explores.

The Rise of Padel: A game changer for employee wellbeing

Padel is one of the fastest growing sports in Britian.

At the end of 2024, there were 400,000 adults and juniors who had played padel at least once in the preceding 12 months in Great Britain – a massive 2566% increase on 2019 figures.

There are now over 893 padel courts across more than 300 venues in Britain, according to LTA Padel. The racquet sport, which combines elements of tennis and squash, has captured global attention and now it’s now making waves in workplace design.

With smaller court dimensions and easy-to-learn rules, padel is accessible to all fitness levels, making it perfect for corporate settings.

Incorporating padel courts at or near office sites can deliver several tangible benefits, including:

  • Boosting Physical Health: Encouraging regular exercise helps reduce stress, improves cardiovascular health, and lowers the risk of burnout.
  • Enhancing Social Interaction: Padel is often played in doubles, promoting teamwork, communication, and friendly competition among colleagues.
  • Supporting Mental Wellbeing: Physical activity triggers endorphin release, improving mood and cognitive function, leading to more focused, creative work.

Leisure spaces as creative hubs

But it’s not just about exercise. Beyond padel courts, workplaces are also embracing leisure spaces designed to foster relaxation and creativity – from lounges, game rooms, and yoga studios, to outdoor terraces with greenery.

“People are looking for ‘authenticity’ in what employers are offering rather than the incentive of Pizza Friday or free coffee or quiz nights.

“Rather than pulling employees away from their responsibilities, workplace padel courts actually enhance productivity by boosting cognitive function, energy levels, and focus—enabling staff to complete tasks more efficiently while delivering sharper, higher-quality results. That’s why we have two clients who are putting padel courts into their office schemes currently,” explains Guy Parkes, Agency Partner at Vail Williams.

Indeed, several corporate wellness studies have found that employees who exercise regularly report 23% higher energy levels, 27% better ability to handle stress, and improved work performance ratings compared to sedentary colleagues.

Padel Benefits

Improved Cognitive Function

Regular exercise has been shown to enhance cognitive functions like concentration, attention, and information processing, leading to increased efficiency and better decision-making. Studies have even found that 15 minutes of moderate exercise can improve cognition.

Reduced Stress and Improved Mental Wellbeing

Exercise acts as a stress reliever, leading to reduced anxiety and depression and fostering a more positive work environment. Happier employees tend to be more engaged and productive.

Increased Energy Levels

Regular physical activity can boost energy levels, combating fatigue and lethargy leaving you with more energy for work tasks.

Reduced Absenteeism

Physically fit employees tend to have stronger immune systems and fewer health issues, resulting in fewer sick days and more consistent work attendance.

Enhanced Creativity and Problem-Solving

Studies suggest a positive correlation between physical activity and creativity and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for innovation in the workplace. Informal settings spark spontaneous conversations and cross-team collaboration that traditional meeting rooms can’t.

Better Employee Engagement and Morale

When organisations demonstrate a commitment to employee well-being through fitness initiatives, it can improve job satisfaction, loyalty, and a sense of belonging, fostering stronger teams and a positive company culture. For instance, a University of Otago study in new Zealand found that regular exercisers were 13% more productive at work.

Attracting and retaining talent

Offering lifestyle-friendly work environments signals that employers value employee wellbeing, enhancing recruitment and retention.

Redefining work-life integration

The lines between work and life continue to blur, and workplaces that adapt by providing wellness-focused amenities gain a competitive edge.  Guy Parkes, Agency Partner at Vail Williams, commented: “Padel courts and leisure spaces demonstrate a commitment to holistic employee experience, helping people balance productivity with wellbeing.”

Anthony Rajwan, Director at CLIM plc which is leasing space at 1 & 2 Arlington Square in Bracknell, added:

“We are noticing that when companies are selecting their next office space, they are looking closely at the amenities on offer which catch the tenant’s eye, as these are seen to bring benefit to their employees and customers, and help curate a memorable experience in the workplace – crucial in today’s marketplace.”

“Companies investing in these facilities often see improved morale, reduced absenteeism, and higher engagement levels. Moreover, such amenities contribute to a strong employer brand—an increasingly important factor as employees prioritize workplace culture and personal health.”

Practical considerations for implementation

For businesses considering adding padel courts or leisure areas, here are some factors to keep in mind:

  • Space and Location: Assess to available space, on-site or nearby, and accessibility for employees.
  • Costs and Partnerships: Explore potential partnerships with local leisure providers or property developers to manage costs.
  • Inclusivity: Ensure amenities cater to diverse interests and abilities, offering a range of options beyond a single sport.
  • Integration with Workflows: Promote use during breaks and after hours, making participation easy without disrupting work schedules.

“Padel courts and leisure spaces are more than just amenities; they’re catalysts for a healthier, happier and more connected workforce.

“As workplace culture evolves, embracing such innovations will be key to creating environments where employees can flourish both professionally and personally,” concluded Guy.
