Challenge

Vail Williams was appointed by Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College to secure planning permission for a new sixth form college building in Brighton to replace outdated temporary modular classrooms.

The new building, designed by HNW Architects, included a ‘hub’ for student-based services, several classrooms, a study area and provision for a 6,189 sq ft library.

How we helped
  • Undertook pre-planning planning advice and public stakeholder engagement.
  • Ensured design met with both the college’s needs, as well as planning committee requirements.
  • Overcame several challenges throughout the planning process, including securing a change of use for the College’s playing fields.
  • Navigated Section 106 requirements between the developer and Local Planning Authority to mitigate the impact of the new development.

“We are indebted to Vail Williams and associates for getting this application across the line. It will enable us to replace ugly temporary buildings with a fit-for-purpose permanent one, in keeping with the rest of our campus.”

Will Baldwin, Principal, Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College.

Result
  • Expert education planning expertise secured planning permission from Brighton and Hove City Council’s Planning Committee, subject to some conditions.
  • Enabled BHASVIC to deliver a modern college which is future proofed for subsequent generations of students from across Sussex.
  • Construction will be carried out in four phases to allow continuity of education.
