Challenge

Vail Williams was appointed by the National Spitfire Project to secure planning permission for the installation of a new monument in Southampton’s Mayflower Park.

A nod to the city’s spitfire manufacturing past, the National Spitfire Project would see a 40m high replica metal spitfire constructed to “honour the few who flew the spitfire, the many who designed, built maintained and delivered it, and all those who benefitted from its flight.”

How we helped
  • Addressed technical planning challenges in order to secure planning permission. This included interaction of the monument with the sea wall, over which it would hang.
  • Ensured the monument was designed such that the sea wall could be raised in the future.
  • Presented the project at planning committee, to put forward the case, including references to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and lighting design, structural reports and the economic business case for the development.

“We are incredibly grateful to Vail Williams, whose technical planning expertise was second-to-none. They supported us throughout the planning process, securing a successful outcome which will see the installation of a significant cultural asset for the city of Southampton.”

Steven Dean, Project Manager, National Spitfire Project.
