Challenge

Vail Williams was appointed by Surrey County Council as a Framework adviser to secure planning permission for the delivery of a new state-of-the-art training facility for Surrey Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS).

The existing Reigate Fire Station premises at Wray Park, built in the 1950s, required demolition and redevelopment to deliver a new facility designed to meet modern firefighting demands.

How we helped
  • Undertook pre-planning planning advice and public stakeholder engagement through a consultation event, leading interaction with the planning and regulatory teams.
  • Strategically advised on construction requirements to make way for new purpose-built facility, whilst ensuring the fire service could remain operational.
  • Overcame design, access and highways challenges owing to nearby heritage assets, including Conservation Area, and operational requirements.
  • Acted as the interface between the design team, interested parties and SFRS, to ensure planning permission was achieved.

We are grateful to Vail Williams’ planning team for the expertise that they brought to this project, which forms part of a wider redevelopment of facilities at Wray Park. This significant redevelopment will provide Surrey’s firefighters with modern, state-of-the-art facilities which are not only fit for the future but align with the Council’s net zero carbon ambitions too.”

Paul Williams, Senior Development Manager, Surrey County Council.

Result
  • Planning permission for the largest single training investment in Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s (SFRS) history was secured.
  • Key features include sustainable energy management through all-electric and solar power, new kitchen, gym and lounge space, with private rest rooms and shower facilities.
  • The new facilities will enhance SFRS’ capacity, enabling more collaboration with blue light partners as well as community engagement.
  • Ground has broken, with the new facility expected to be delivered by 2026, meeting modern firefighting demands and community need.
