Challenge

Vail Williams was appointed by global technology brand, TÜV SÜD, to provide expert planning advice within a tight timeframe, for the installation of solar PV technology on their premises at Octagon House in Segensworth, Fareham.

The client wanted to add a large-scale solar PV installation onto the roof, which would deliver significant savings to the company in the long term.

How we helped
  • Undertook detailed appraisal of the project in line with permitted development rights (PDR) to ensure criteria was met.
  • Submitted planning application with appropriate factual information to confirm compliance with PDR, and a Chartered Town Planner’s assessment of the potential impact of the proposed development
  • Established with the Local Planning Authority (LPA) that no ‘prior approval’ was required in respect of the proposals and the subjective matter of potential impact.
  • Works needed to be approved before commencement, requiring a quick planning turnaround and installation as soon as possible.

Vail Williams secured planning permission quickly and efficiently, liaising with the LPA throughout to ensure a quick determination. This allowed us to push ahead with installation without delay and we are incredibly grateful to the team.

Dominic Hurrell, UK Facilities Manager, TÜV SÜD

Result
  • The application was submitted in a timely manner, validated the same day and approved in just over a month.
  • By discussing the application with the LPA early on, we ensured an early determination.
  • Client was able to install the units at a cost of £394,060 with an annual estimated energy production of 378.03MWh.
  • Annual CO2 emissions will be reduced by 73.28 tonnes (equivalent to planting 3,358 trees).
  • Project is predicted to save the client £3,722,460 over the next 20 years after deduction of costs.
