Property valuations team welcomes surveyor, Julian Brett

June 20, 2017

For our latest recruit, variety is the spice of life, and we’re looking forward to being able to offer this to Julian Brett, through the broad client base that he’ll come into contact with here at Vail Williams.

Julian joins our Southampton office from Keygrove Chartered Surveyors where he specialised in agency and professional services valuations.

He joins our property valuations team and is looking forward to becoming Chartered, and working towards becoming a Registered Valuer.

We spoke to Julian to find out more about why he chose to join Vail Williams.

  • What attracted you to your new post at Vail Williams?

I was attracted to the firm by its focus on professional development and the support that it gives to its staff with gaining qualifications such as the APC. I’m also looking forward to working with a number of major brands in my role, and more complex projects which will challenge me.

  • What are your ambitions in the role?

My main aim to be become Chartered, and also to work towards becoming a Registered Valuer, which the firm is very supportive of.

  • What’s the best thing about working in property, and why?

You probably hear this a lot, but every project is different and interesting because of the factors that make it unique. They do say that variety is the spice of life!

  • What was your first ever job?

My first ever foray into work as a spritely 15 year old, was washing dishes. I got £40 a shift, which wasn’t bad. Worth the shrivelled fingers at the time!

  • What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

You only lose what you cling to.

  • If you had to recommend a good book, what would it be, and why?

Treasure Island because it’s a great adventure and full of some great quotes, as is Long John Silver’s dialogue.

  • Tell us a surprising fact about yourself

I have lived in China – for 4 years in fact.

  • Have you ever had a hair-raising moment, if so, what was it?

It would have to be coming across a cobra on the golf course (in China).

  • What’s your favourite band?

Beck/Bowie/Tallest Man on Earth.

  • If you could work in any other profession, what would it be and why?

I would have to be a super yacht skipper – sailing other people’s boats around the world to all sorts of exciting and exotic destinations.
