Challenge

Vail Williams was appointed by longstanding client JoJo Maman Bébé to provide specialist business rates advice across its UK-wide retail portfolio.

While eligible for Retail, Hospitality and Leisure (RHL) Relief, securing this was complex due to inconsistent local authority processes, a multi-site portfolio across England and Wales, and the need to maximise claims without exceeding the cap.

The client required a proactive, expert-led approach to ensure all eligible business rates reliefs were secured efficiently and compliantly, without adding administrative burden.

How we helped
  • Delivered a structured business rates approach to identify, secure and optimise business rates relief opportunities, conducting a full portfolio-wide assessment of all 33 stores to identify eligibility for RHL relief.
  • Analysed differences in local authority processes across England and Wales, calculating potential savings for each, property, dating back to the 2023 financial year.
  • Strategically selected which properties to claim RHL relieif against to maximise savings.
  • Managed the business rates relief application process across 14 properties in a phased approach, liaising directly with individual councils, responding to queries and ensuring all evidential requirements were met.

“We are extremely grateful to Vail Williams for their expert business rates advice and support. They have taken what can be a complex and time-consuming process off our hands, allowing us to focus on our core business. Their proactive approach, from reviewing our eligibility to managing discussions with local authorities, has delivered significant cost savings that we have reinvested back into the business. We highly value their expertise and would not hesitate to recommend their services.”

Louise Jones, Property Manager, JoJo Maman Bébé.
